Mentorship & Community

I am very passionate about teaching, mentorship, and community outreach. Learn more about my activities in these areas including articles I have written for Elemental Magazine - the University of Toronto’s (UofT) student-led mental health magazine - and efforts to highlight graduate student wellness at the Institute of Medical Science (IMS).

Teaching

  • MSC1090 - Introduction to Computational Biostatistics with R

As a teaching assistant for this graduate-level course delivered through IMS, I assist Dr. Erik Spence in the delivery of this course and provide graduate students with a strong theoretical understanding of statistics and essential computational skills (Bash, R) needed to apply the theory to real world data.

  • Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics Summer Academy

The KCNI Summer Academy is an annual workshop held at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health open to local and international researchers interested in getting hands-on experience with neuroinformatics. I have developed and delivered teaching material focused on SNP-level genetic data integration using MetaXcan and PRSice.

  • NeuroSci 101 - Neural Networks & Artificial Brains

I am a guest lecturer for NeuroSci 101, a free course organized by the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience at UofT, offered to high school students interested in learning more about neuroscience. I have developed and delivered interactive lecture material on Neural Networks & Artificial Brains.

Mentorship

  • GradMinds Peer Support Initiative

I am a founding member and executive member of the GMPS, a peer support initiative led by GradMinds, the Mental Health Committee of the UofT’s Graduate Student Union. The GMPS is focused on providing fellow graduate students a safe and judgment-free space to interact with other graduate students. I work with other executive members to gather training opportunities for mentors affiliated with GMPS and also acted as a mentor for the program.

    • Students mentored: 8 graduate students.
  • Neurological and Neurodegenerative Disease Student Association

I am a mentor for NANSA, a student-run organization at UofT fostering student interest in research related to neurological diseases.

    • Students mentored: 3 undergraduate students.
  • Collaborative Program in Neuroscience Undergraduate Mentorship Program

I am a mentor for the CPIN Undergraduate Mentorship Program which offers senior undergraduate students interested in graduate programs in neuroscience an opportunity to connect with current graduate students and learn about the application process and day to day work of graduate research.

    • Students mentored: 3 undergraduate students.

Let's Talk Grad Wellness

  • LTGW is a Research & Health Sciences Education funded grant that focuses on facilitating conversations about graduate student wellness across the IMS. As an executive member, I lead LTGW in bringing a focus to student-supervisor relationships, mental health resources and advocacy, as well as wellness integration in the department. For example, LTGW has adapted the individual development plan from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to include student-focused content and co-developed new curriculum with the IMS to implement IDPs into every student’s professional development.
